A different chance meeting

Practice. Why did practice have to be so early? Joining the Fire Ferrets was a great idea and Korra was having fun; but waking up early was just not something she was looking forward to every morning. Today, it finally caught up to her and she was running late. "Thanks Pema!" Taking a very quick breakfast from what Pema had half-coked, Korra was out the temple in a blur and waterbending her way across the bay to the city. Even with her practice clothing and helmet, she managed it easily enough. The ferry would have taken too long.

After she made her way through the streets on foot, she didn't have time to try and work out the public transportation schedules, Korra was finally able to see the large golden building off in the distance. A boost of energy came from that and she lighted up as she locked her eyes on her destination and ran full tilt into the street. As usual, she ignored the honking and other loud sounds of the city. They would only distract her from her goal

"Almost there!"

"Okay." Asami gave Korra a quick wink as she smoothed her dress over her legs. That was all the reassurance she needed.

It wasn't long until the waiter was approaching with two plates of cake. The 'big slices' request had clearly been taken to heart.

Satisfied and at ease, Korra grabbed her plate with both hands and slid it over to her. She was about to grab her fork and just dig right in, but she paused to glance at Asami. The thought she had was another impulse the Avatar didn't fight off. She stood up as best she could and tugged the rope to close the privacy curtain, sitting down when the light of the lamp on wall was the only light they had.

Giving a smile while biting down on both her lips, Korra took a piece of the cake with her fork and held it out to Asami.

...Well the Avatar certainly knew how to take initiative.

Asami had just been about to take a forkful of her own dessert when she noticed Korra's silent offer. It was her turn to turn a little pink in the lowered light. Keeping her eyes on Korra's and a little grin on her face, she craned her neck to take the forkfull between her lips.

Feeding someone else was something Korra had been wanting to do and she smiled brightly when Asami went to take a bite, but she ended up staring back into Asami's eyes instead of watching her eat.

But she did get to see that bit of color in her peripheral vision.

Slowly, Korra withdrew the fork from her lips and the lightest breath holding a pleased hum came out of her. "First bite's always the best one."

"Mmm." Asami nodded as she took a fork-full of her own cake and held it out to Korra as she swallowed.

"Your turn." Her tongue poked out to like the chocolate off her lips.

Even though they were in the privacy, Korra had a nervous feeling feeling crawl up from her stomach and her mouth wavered slightly as she opened it to take the bite. That slight shakiness along with her looking up at Asami caused her to drop some crumbs and an apology was garbled through the cake on her tongue as she went to pick off the bits that fell on her chest.

Very new at this.

Asami laughed lightly with Korra's fumble. She set her fork down for a moment, lifting the napkin from her lap and offering it to Korra.

"Here- As far as I know, cake isn't a fashion statement."

"I sure hope not, that'd be a waste of food." Smiling her thanks, Korra took the napkin and got off most of the crumbs. She scooped a large piece of cake onto her fork and chomped down on it. "This stuff is so good." Were it not for her pacing herself, Korra would have demolished her slice in little to no time.

"It is," Asami agreed, taking a slightly more... contained bite of her own cake.

So... What do two girls talk about over dinner? Probending? It was all she could really think of.

"So you guys are gearing up for the playoffs. Is training going well?"

Already keeping herself in check by only taking large bites, Korra could only wonder why Asami was torturing herself by taking small bites. But she did try smaller bites, even if they didn't coat her entire mouth with flavor.

"I'd love it if we could make it to the finals! Training's going good and helping me get the rules down." Not that she hasn't broken one or two on purpose, but still. "Maybe if we make it, we can throw a party." Not like she had the chance to attend any parties.

Not yet anyway.

"You guy's will make it. I'm sure. And hey, if you do, I'll throw you a party if you want." Asami gave Korra another wink. Tossing around a party or two was hardly a big thing in her book, and she liked to think of herself as one of the Fire Ferret's biggest fans.

"The rules aren't too complicated, thankfully. Just so long as you don't go tossing fireballs at anyone." She chuckled.

"Just so long as they don't do something to deserve it." She pointed her fork at Asami as she said it, he smile just behind it and only slightly ruined by the bit of chocolate frosting around her mouth.

"But I'd love to do that. It'd be my first party." The sound of her fork clinking on her plate made her look down in surprise at the lack of cake. That wasn't fair, she went out of her way to do smaller bites.

"I promise it won't be quite as... stiff as things are here." She nudged her own dish closer to Korra, silently offering to share what was left of her slice.

"Stepping into the public eye must be pretty major for the Avatar. Keeping things on the down-low might be a good time, when we can manage."

Without even hesitating, Korra smiled and scooted a little closer so she could get to the plate properly; which put her shoulder to shoulder with Asami. "Sounds good to me. I don’t mind it, but the cameras and questions get pretty tiring after a while."

She ate the last bits of cake easily enough and turned to look at Asami when she was done, actually managing to not get any of it on her face this time. "But yeah, a party with you would be great."

And the rest of the team. Or something.

Well, private private parties were always an option. But so was bugging out early.

"Tell me about it." There was a hint of a roll in her eyes as Asami spoke. The press could get exhausting. She wasn't nearly the celebrity Korra was, but she still knew how awful it could be. She glanced down to the empty plate, then back up to Korra.

"I guess we should get the check, huh..." Which meant opening the curtains. Which meant not sitting on top of each other...

"I guess." That was the farthest thing from Korra's mind right now considering how close they were right now, and her gut was telling her to end this evening's dinner right. She looked over to the privacy curtain after getting up halfway, but the inclination to open it wasn't there and it showed on her face when she looked back to Asami.

She'd forgive her, right? After all, they did agree to a date date and that was an incredible waste of the privacy they had just then.

Which was exactly why she leaned down, hesitantly at first with her eyes moving from Asami's eyes down to her lips, and then lightly touched her lips against hers and hoped that feeling in her stomach wasn't about to get her in trouble like it usually did.

Asami wasn't thinking about the check, either. At least not anymore. There was a brief thought of 'well, that didn't take long,' but it wasn't a bad one. In the moment, it felt natural. And if it felt natural, why should she hesitate? What was the point in waiting?

The corner of Asami's lips turned up in a small smile as she leaned in to return the kiss, lightly. She knew she should keep it brief. It was only a first kiss. But she closed her eyes, faintly tasting chocolate on Korra's full, lightly chapped lips.

Was it the Avatar's first first kiss? She would venture to guess 'yes.'

Apprehension was laid to rest when she felt Asami kiss back and a tingle in Korra's belly shot straight up to her chest, her lips pressing together to catch the smallest bit of Asami's between them.

By the color of her cheeks when she pulled away, Asami would be able to see just right her assumption was when Korra looked into her eyes with a shy smile. Korra had never kissed anyone on the lips before and she was very glad to get that urge out of her system. She had been fighting it before the dinner even arrived and keeping her emotions pent up wasn't easy by any means.

After a few moments of letting her heart rate tone back down, Korra said "...I'll get that curtain if you're ready." Though she really wanted to stay where she was.

There was a dash of color across Asami's cheeks, though it wasn't nearly as obvious as Korra's. She watched the other girl as she drew back, green eyes lingering on clear blue.

"Yeah, I think we're ready to get out of here." This had officially crossed the line from a friendly dinner to something a little more. Asami's small grin widened when she noticed a small dash of lipstick on Korra's lips.

"May want to give your mouth a little wipe, though," she added quietly, a note of amusement in her voice.

Eyes wide, she blinked and brought her wrist up to her lips. When she looked at the small, red smear Korra brought both her lips in between her teeth and managed a sheepish smile. "Thanks."

Of all things, that made her more embarrassed than the kiss itself.

Just as she began to pull the curtain back, the waiter was only a few steps away from their table and caught Korra by surprise. She was expecting them to have at least a little more time before the check arrived.

"Wow, they really don't mess around when it comes to money, do they?" Actually remembering where she was, Korra kept that at a whisper to Asami and just out of earshot before he arrived with check in hand.

"No problem." Asami gave Korra a quick wink before the curtains pulled open, revealing the waiter. As for the money comment, she simply shrugged. This was the norm, as far as she was concerned. She strategically snatched up the check before Korra could see it, signing it off on her father's tab and handing it back to the waiter with a polite smile.

"I'm guessing you want to change, then we can get out of here?" She felt a little badly about putting Korra through the whole 'getting ready' thing when it clearly wasn't her thing, but... not badly enough to apologize.

That was way too fast for Korra get a good look-see to find out how much the damage was, but Asami didn't seem to mind the price. Next time maybe she would hold off on getting more than one serving.

Maybe.

Giving half of an apologetic smile, Korra nodded twice. "Yeah. If you don't mind." The dress was nice, her host had told her as much (she could only go off that), but Korra was only comfortable in her usual clothes. ~~Or none at all.~~

"-they didn't throw my clothes away, right?" Serious concern at that very moment.

Wait. Pause. She was joking, right? No, she wasn't...

"I-" Asami paused, at a slight loss for words. "No, of course they didn't," she finished with another small laugh and some raised eyebrows. "They're just holding onto them for you. They should be back in the room when we get there. If they did get thrown away, then someone's going to lose their job." Haha. Businesspeople humor...

"Okay." That's settled, she can breathe again. "Don't want to to lose my leather." Korra's rather proud of the things she made by herself.

"All right, let's go then." She was saving the thanks for the dinner when she and Asami were going to part ways, not in public. Something she was getting the hang of, and was set on learning. Especially with what just happened.

Getting up, Korra dusted off the cake crumbs on her dress while Asami got up so they could go back to the dressing room.

Meanwhile, not a single crumb could be seen on the napkin Asami had placed over her lap. She bit her tongue, once again smiling in a mixture of fondness and disbelieve as Korra so casually strolled off toward the dressing room.

Once there, Asami retrieved the other girl's clothes from a hanger (definitely not thrown away) and held onto them for Korra.

"I can drive you home, if you need a lift. No point in taking a cab if you don't have to."
