A different chance meeting

Practice. Why did practice have to be so early? Joining the Fire Ferrets was a great idea and Korra was having fun; but waking up early was just not something she was looking forward to every morning. Today, it finally caught up to her and she was running late. "Thanks Pema!" Taking a very quick breakfast from what Pema had half-coked, Korra was out the temple in a blur and waterbending her way across the bay to the city. Even with her practice clothing and helmet, she managed it easily enough. The ferry would have taken too long.

After she made her way through the streets on foot, she didn't have time to try and work out the public transportation schedules, Korra was finally able to see the large golden building off in the distance. A boost of energy came from that and she lighted up as she locked her eyes on her destination and ran full tilt into the street. As usual, she ignored the honking and other loud sounds of the city. They would only distract her from her goal

"Almost there!"

Something in Asami's chest leaped when Korra gave her answer. She couldn't contain a genuine grin, and it showed. All too suddenly, she felt like she could kiss the girl. Here and now. In the middle of the restaurant.

But she didn't. Asami knew better than to risk scaring her off. And she was worried about that.

"Perfect," she said, her voice warm and slightly lowered. Food? What food? She hesitated for another moment before adding- "Yeah, I think I'm kinda glad I hit you with my moped."

That giddy sensation was back and it made Korra's stomach turn in on itself, but it felt kind of good. Giving a shy smile, Korra did her best to eat her food without looking at Asami too much. She had an idea on how much of a bashful dork she would look like for the rest of the night.

Finally turning her attention to her plate, Asami started in on her dinner. The food was fantastic, as was to be expected. Her eyes darted between her meal and Korra, unable to settle their attention.

"Different from Water Tribe cuisine?" she piped up, trying to strike up a conversation.

Turning to answer with her cheeks full and stray noodles dangling out of her mouth, Korra had the clarity to just nod and not spill food all over herself. Less bashful and more dork at just the wrong time. She quickly scarfed down her food, which would have looked a little more normal in her usual clothes.

Not so much in a dress.

"Very! I don't know what seasonings they're using or how they made their noodles, but it's really good. Thanks for ordering it!"

Asami bit her lip, amused at Korra's... interesting take on table manners. Whatever worked, she supposed...

"I'm glad you like it. That's at least one thing we don't have to worry about. Finding you food," she said with a small laugh.

"Are you kidding? I'll eat almost anything as long as it tastes good." With an iron stomach like hers, everything would probably qualify as tasty. After she gulped down some of her water, Korra started working on her second plate.

"But this place really goes out of their way to make it delicious, even if it means less." Ordering two was a smart move considering the portion sizes here.

And just like that, plate number one was gone. If Asami didn't pick up the pace, Korra was going to be left waiting on her! That wouldn't do...

"Good to know," she said with a chuckle as she started in on her own plate. Asami was a much... quieter eater, compared to Korra. She'd taken etiquette lessons her whole life, after all.

After filling up one of her cheeks with noodles, Korra noticed that she was the only one eating loudly. When she looked over at Asami and saw that she was actually having a meal, Korra's chewing slowed to a stop.

She'd been so hungry that she completely forgot her table manners. Normally she used them when having dinner with Tenzin's family, and right now was also the perfect time for them.

Wow, she missed that boat with her second plate half gone.

Clearing her throat, Korra began to use her chopsticks to pick regular sized portions. Occasionally stealing a glance at Asami to measure just what that size would be given how small the meals were.

Asami caught Korra slowing down, as well as the occasional glance sent her way. She smirked subtly to herself and continued to eat, trying to catch Korra's eye.

"You're not going to need another plate, are you?" she asked jokingly.

"No! No, no. This is good. Fine." That could have come out a little too fast. Korra took a drink of her water and accidentally bumped her elbow against Asami. "Oops, sorry!" How did they get to be so close?

Probably from Korra scooting closer without even thinking about it.

"Don't worry about it." Asami nudged her foot lightly against Korra's with another small smile. Not first date etiquette? Oh, well. They were sitting close, and she was nearly done with her dinner.

That brought Korra’s knees together and she raised her eyebrows, but she returned the small smile. She tapped back at Asami with side of her foot. "I’m just trying to get the hang of this." Whether it was dinner or the prospect of having an official ‘date’, with a girl no less, Korra left that up to her new friend to decide.

Having demolished more than half her meal, Korra was winding down to the last few bites. "Still hungry?" Offering the food may have seemed gauche in a restaurant like Kwong’s, but it was a pretty affectionate gesture in Korra’s experience.

Because if there was one thing Korra was very much all about, it was food. And Asami treating her to a meal showed the easiest path to the Avatar’s heart was through her stomach.

"Fair enough." She picked up on the open-ended comment. Asami was in the same boat, really. She'd been on plenty of dates, been in plenty of casual relationships that had never really extended past that, but never with a girl. It wasn't fundamentally different, but at the same time... It kind of was. At least in how she would have to publicly present this...

But she was getting ahead of herself.

Asami glanced briefly around the restaurant. Nobody was looking...

"Sure-" Quick and careful, as if she was committing some sort of taboo, she snatched a small mouthful off noodles off Korra's dish.

At first Korra thought that Asami was looking for someone, so she took a quick glance too. But then she saw Asami lean over to eat off her plate and Korra did her best to not laugh, but she did smile enough that her cheeks forced her eyes shut.

"I can get that curtain for you if you want." she whispered through her smile. Part of her wanted to do it save Asami from having to eat quickly, but another part wanted to leave it open so they could order dessert.

Close the curtain? Asami grinned at that, her teeth chewing lightly on her bottom lip before she realized she was doing it. Her train of thought, however, followed Korra's.

"Let's wait 'til he comes back for desert." There was a flirtatious note in her voice as she dared to reach for Korra's plate once again.

Being distracted by that small lip bite didn't last long for Korra, the promise of dessert and the fact that she was thinking along the same lines made her relax into the back cushion of the booth.

"I'll keep an eye out." she said with a playful wink and occasionally looked for the waiter to pass by. Most people would raise a single finger and nothing more, Korra on the other hand would happily flag him down from across the restaurant.

With her fingers in her mouth to give a loud whistle.

"Korra, don't-" Too late. Asami's eyes clinched shut and she cringed. Naturally, the whistle caught the waiters attention. Unfortunately, it also caught the rest of the restaurant's.

"Don't do that again." She eyed their surroundings warily, hoping that the incident would pass without hiccup.

Looking over at Asami, she looked a little confused, and slightly worried too. "Okay. But why? It's getting us dessert, right?" It was the quickest and easiest way to get what they wanted, so to Korra it worked.

Still, she didn't want to put any duress on her hostess for the evening.

"Well..." Another glance out to the others. They had mostly returned to their food, but... "People will stare."

Asami offered a slightly uncertain but reassuring smile.

"Don't worry about it. You're right. It is getting us dessert." But, just to make sure- "Just... Next time, we'll find a quieter way, okay?"

That detail got Korra to scan the large dining room with her eyes, and she did catch a few that were looking right before hastily going back to their meal. Korra placed her hands in her lap and looked over at Asami while giving her two thumbs up from behind the table cloth.

Quiet next time, she put that to memory.

Then after a moment, she grinned at there being a next time; it let her no she didn't mess up too badly. But the waiter arrived and Korra looked over the proffered menu with the tip of her tongue sticking out between her lips.

"What's your favorite?"

"Well, I like pretty much anything chocolate..." she murmured as she peered over Korra's shoulder to look at the menu. The one intended for her viewing sat ignored in front of her.

"Why don't you surprise me?" She raised her eyebrows at Korra, once again hardly minding the waiter.

"It won't be much of a surprise, because I like chocolate too." Said with a bright smile as her eyes hungrily scoured the menu before settling on a selection. "I like the three layered slice of cake, how about-" Korra turned to ask Asami, oblivious to the fact that she was right there over her shoulder, and her nose brushed against hers.

"...you?" She was looking directly into her green eyes and could feel the heat rise up in her cheeks.

Maybe Asami just hadn't had enough time to react and not make it quite as awkward. Or maybe she just didn't care enough to move away. Another option would be that she flat out didn't want to.

Details.

"That sounds delicious." Asami's voice was lowered appropriately, given their proximity. Her eyes lingered on Korra for a brief, telling moment before she sat back and turned to the waiter.

"Two slices of that cake, then."

Korra sucked in the breath that carried Asami's words and her eyes were completely locked on Asami's for that moment; her mouth feeling dry. Blinking, as if she was some place else entirely, Korra did the same and looked at the waiter.

"Big slices, please!" She said happily, unconcerned about anything else just then. "I could really use a chocolate overload right now."

Asami hummed quietly in agreement as the (slightly bewildered) waiter wrote down their orders and left.

"So... What were we talking about?" It was phrased like a joke, but she honestly coudn't remember.
